How often should I have my brake pads replaced?

The lifespan of brake pads can vary considerably based on how often brakes are applied by the driver. Depending on your brake usage habits, the brake pads on your car or truck may last anywhere from 20,000 to 80,000 miles. Typically, brake pads should be replaced by an auto mechanic in Minnesota every 30,000 to 40,000 miles to ensure that your brakes can operate as intended when you need them.

There are a number of factors which impact how often you’ll need to change your brake pads. These include:

  • How aggressively you drive and brake. If you’re the type who speeds when you can and then brakes abruptly to avoid collisions when traffic slows down, expect your brake pads to wear out faster than average. Slower drivers who rarely have to slam their brakes will see their brake pads last longer.
  • The type of brake pads your vehicle has. The ceramic brake pads found on luxury cars are the sturdiest, often lasting 70,000 miles. Semi-metallic brake pads also have a longer lifespan than common organic brake pads do.
  • Whether your vehicle is automatic or manual. Because drivers of automobiles with manual transmissions can rely on engine braking instead of their brakes, the brake pads on manual vehicles tend to wear out more slowly than those on vehicles with automatic transmissions.
  • Where you’re driving your truck or car. Rough terrain and, especially, terrain with a lot of hills will usually wear brake pads out more quickly. Stop and go traffic during rush hour can also take a toll on brake pads.
