How do I check the tire tread on my car?

When you purchase new tires for your car, the tire treads should have a depth of about ⅓ of an inch. However, each time you drive, the treads of your tires will be worn down a tiny amount. Driving over rough terrain or slamming your brakes can accelerate how fast tires are worn down. If your tires are worn down too far, they won’t have the same traction on the road, which can make it harder for you to steer your vehicle and easier for you to lose control of it.

Once your tire treads are worn down to ⅛ of an inch, you will need to monitor them regularly. By the time tire treads are worn down to 1/16 of an inch, they are balding and will need to be replaced to ensure your car or truck’s safety and performance on the road. How often you need to replace your tires will be dependent on your driving habits, but tire replacements are recommended at least once every six years.

The tread depth of your tires can easily be tested using a penny. With the head of a penny facing toward you, turn it upside down and insert President Lincoln’s head into the tread groove of your tire. If Lincoln’s head is fully visible, this means that your treads have been worn down to 1/16 of an inch and your tires need to be replaced as soon as possible.

Bring your vehicle to a trusted auto repair shop in Minnesota if you’re in need of tire replacements for your car or truck.
